Anxiety Disorders Attack In Many Ways

Anxiety disorders have been attracting a lot of attention lately, as American public service campaigns encourage friends to stay close to their acquaintances that may have a mental problem. The commercials that can be seen on national television speak of the alienating patterns that commonly arise during anxiety disorders, and compel people to search for aid and give a level of support to the person suffering.

But, just how prevalent are anxiety disorders in America and what types do they adopt? According to the Anxiety Disorders Association of America, this collective condition plagues a good 40 million Americans. With a number of different forms, anxiety disorders can differ from having rather moderate symptoms to very acute phobias.

The different types of anxiety disorders are:

Generalized Anxiety - Affecting some 6.8 million Americans age 18 or beyond, this form of the condition is characterized by a person becoming extremely worried over mundane issues. People with this condition can find themselves being isolated from life by fears that arise out of either, justified or irrational reasons.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder - With some 2.2 million Americans suffering from this form of condition, it is the least common of the disorders. This condition is characterized by an urge to perform repetitive acts in a nearly ritualistic manner. Hand wringing is a common pattern of this condition.

Panic Disorder - This form of condition involves fear or panic attacks. It affects some 6 million people and can be a rather debilitating disorder. Since panic attacks mimic heart attacks and other serious conditions, people almost always literally think they are dying while in the throes of an attack. In a number of instances, anything that has started a panic attack in the past should be avoided at all costs.

Post traumatic Stress - This particular disorder is thought to impact on about 7.7 million people. It is brought on by extreme trauma, such as rape, abuse or seeing a brutal act.

Social Anxiety - With 15 million people suffering from this form of anxiety, the condition is seen as very severe. Generally, this is the form of anxiety targeted by the public service ads on American television. In its gravest form, people with this condition should stay away from public areas at all costs.

Phobias - An illogical fear of heights, spiders, snakes and other such things can cause a person to be affected by a severe bout of anxiety. This condition strikes approximately 19 million people and includes a host of various phobias.

Anxiety disorders are more widespread than most people realize. When the symptoms are acute and they sideline a person from everyday activities, assistance should be sought. Medical doctors, psychologists and other therapists can assist patients to overcome their anxiety disorders in many ways.
